Tips for Finding the Perfect Jewelry Gift for Mother's Day (or Any Occasion)

Mother's Day is coming up fast (it's Sunday, May 8th)! If you're like me, you're always struggling to find that perfect gift that will make your Mom feel extra-special. As it turns out, jewelry is one of the most popular gifts for this holiday, which makes sense considering that 1) it can carry sentimental value, 2) make someone feel beautiful, and 3) feel like a bit of a luxury (or not something people always buy for themselves).

But as we all know, buying jewelry for someone else can be tricky? After all, there are so many factors to consider, such as the person's style, favorite colors, preferred metals (and potential metal sensitivities), etc. It can be hard to guess what kind of jewelry piece someone will like, especially if you aren't able to see what that person wears on a day-to-day basis.

After doing a little research, I found some great tips that can make the Mother's Day gift-giving process a whole lot easier and last stressful...

1. Check out the photos on the person's social media accounts. I have actually done this before I knew it was a recommended strategy for jewelry gift-giving, and it worked like a charm (excuse the pun). The overall idea is not to look at photos of the person to see what kind of jewelry he/she typically wears, including the color of the metal (gold, silver, rose gold, etc.), favorite gemstones, and the overall style (boho chic, minimalist, bold & dramatic, etc.). While you don't necessarily need to try to duplicate the exact types of pieces the person is wearing in the photos, it is generally best not to stray too far from them in terms of the color, style, and metal.

2. When in doubt, stick with timeless classics. If you're not sure which direction to go in, it's usually best to stick with classic pieces that are simple and versatile. Check out the To the Nines Jewelry for some great examples of timeless pieces that also have a unique twist. The key here is to look for simple, understated designs that are also versatile in terms of style and color. For example, pearls or stones in neutral colors are very popular and can be worn with a variety of different outfits in a person's wardrobe. Also, you can also seek out pieces that are versatile in that they can be worn for casual, office, and more formal occasions.

3. Go for a piece that is unique or sentimental. This might seem like a no-brainer, but another strategy is to pick pieces that have special meaning or significance for the recipient. This could mean a customized birthstone, a personal engraved message, or even an element that has significance, such as a favorite animal. Handmade and vintage jewelry are also fantastic options because they are unique, making it much more likely that the gift recipient won't already have something similar in their jewelry collection.

4. Seek out guidance. Another effective strategy is to seek out the assistance of a retail shop owner or sales person to get their recommendations. Although everyone's taste in jewelry is unique, it often helps to get a sense of what kinds of pieces are extremely popular with sellers. When you are shopping for jewelry online, you can also browse the shop/retail website to see if you can find a "best sellers" or take a look at the customer reviews to get a sense of which pieces are the top sellers.

5. Buy a Gift Card. This may seem like another no-brainer, but there is a reason why gift cards make popular gifts. A lot of people love them, but if you're worried that a gift card might seem too impersonal, you might want to try mixing it up by purchasing one from a local-based or handmade shop (which sells more customized or unique products) or present it in a more unique or creative manner (ex: place it inside a nice jewelry box or organizer pouch).

6. Purchase the jewelry from a shop/retailer that has a great return & exchange policy. If you're not completely sure that the recipient will like the jewelry gift, be sure to purchase from a shop/retailer that has a great return and exchange policy. It's always a good idea to request a gift receipt, which can be presented along with the gift (as a way to let the recipient know that it can be returned if needed).
