Everyone who knows me knows that if there's anything I love (almost as much) as making jewelry, it's shopping for jewelry! I pretty much love all kinds - costume jewelry, high-end fashion jewelry, vintage jewelry, fine jewelry, etc., (you name it) - but one problem with this passion of mine is that it can get expensive pretty fast. Depending on your financial situation, this might work for you if you are willing to invest in only one pair of earrings, a necklace, or a bracelet that you are willing to wear everyday, but it's not feasible option for those like me who love to keep mixing up their jewelry style. On the opposite end of the spectrum is so-called costume jewelry, but when going this route, you are often you are left to choose between cheaply made "fast fashion" pieces or pieces from brand name designers that can sometimes be incredibly overpriced. At least in my experience, it can be difficult to build a stylish and high-quality jewelry collection on a budget.
But if there is one thing I've learned from making my own handmade jewelry, it's that it is definitely possible to build a great jewelry collection for very little money! One great option to consider is the thrift store, consignment shop, or resale boutique like the Partners in Care Upscale Resale Boutique I visited today in Frederick, Maryland.
This was the first time I visited this brand-new boutique, and let me tell you...this place is a hidden gem in Frederick! It is brand new (it opened just a few weeks ago I believe), and offers a variety of gently used items like housewares, clothing, shoes, art, and yes, a fantastic selection of both costume and fine jewelry. Sales from the boutique items fund about 40% of the programs provided by Partners in Care, which is a private nonprofit organization dedicated to helping senior adults (60+) live independent lives.
Pictured below is the
section at the back of the boutique where there are several racks full of costume necklaces, brooches/pins and earrings. You can also find more jewelry at the front counter (ex: earrings, bangles, etc) and fine jewelry (ex: sterling silver, gold, etc.) in a special room off to the side where an area of glass cases have been placed.
